STANDING RULE I -- REPEATER USAGE

The following have been established as official guidelines for proper operating practices for the TARC repeaters:

To make it simple we have derived each of the 7 points to track with the name HAMCLUB.

Hang out

Listen for a while to get the hang of the group.  Also to see if anyone is using the repeater.

Announce

Say "This is [call sign] monitoring/listening" to indicate you would like to use the repeater,

"Break" to indicate you would like to speak immediately.

"Break Break" to indicate you have an emergency and need the repeater immediately.

Minimal Power

Use the minimum amount of power necessary to maintain communications.  This FCC regulation [97.313(a)] minimizes the possibility of accessing distant repeaters on the same frequency.

Courteous

Pause between transmissions.  Allow the repeater to complete its courtesy tone sequence.  This allows other hams to use the repeater (someone may have an emergency).  Letting the repeater transmitter drop completely is not necessary.

Legal

Identify legally; you must identify at the end of a transmission or series of transmissions and at lease once each 10 minutes during the communication.  TARC also request identification when asked to do so.

Useful

Don't break into a contact unless you have something to add.  Interrupting is no more polite on the air that it is in person.  Nobody likes a LID.

Brief

Keep transmissions short and thoughtful.  Long monologues may prevent someone with an emergency from using the repeater or might time out the repeater.  Your transmissions are being heard by many listeners including non-hams with "public service band" monitors or scanners; don't give a bad impression of our service.
